Young Olympians
I think it is disgraceful that our young American athletes stand on the podium accepting their Olympic medals in front of the entire world and are mute while our national anthem is being played. I have only seen a small handful of them even attempt to mouth the words whereas other young men and women from other nations have been observed proudly singing theirs. Due to the current state of our country and what is and isn't being taught in our schools, I would venture a guess they don't even know the words.

Misunderstood
Sadly, the pathetic excuse for a man who terrorized the Sikh Temple didn't even understand the faith of the people he was shooting. Gentle, loving people who came to our country for a better life. Shame on him and his kind.
Fitting memorial
It would be a fitting memorial to those who have served their country to place a small American flag in their obituary. Other newspapers do this and it is a last salute in their honor.
Teach how to read
I think Ann Whitten's article in the paper on Monday is wonderful and so true. I have seen it and I believe she is right on the money. Please, please, teachers, teach my child to read. If you teach her to read, everything else will fall in place. A child wanting to read but doesn't know how will try to hide the fact from you and it's so sad. I have seen her stop reading or to make excuses because she is so afraid something is wrong with herself. If anyone has any books or anything they want to recommend, please call the TalkBack column.
