Course will teach citizens the ins and outs of police work

By KAREN DAILY kdaily@aikenstandard.com

A Citizens Public Safety Academy is kicking off next month for residents who want to get the inside scoop on local law enforcement and what it takes to be a Public Safety officer.

Starting Sept. 13, Aiken Public will launch a nine-week program with one class each Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m., teaching the ins and outs of basic patrol functions, firefighters, use of force, community policing, traffic safety and criminal investigation.

Aiken Public Safety Sgt. Jake Mahoney said the community will have a better understanding of what police can do for them and what they can do to assist Public Safety.

The Citizens Public Safety Academy is intended to be an overview of the Aiken Department of Public Safety's functions and operations, he said.

Participants will not be trained as police officers or firefighters.

The class is aimed at adult students, and class size is limited and will be filled on a first-come basis.

All Aiken-area residents are welcome, but preferential treatment will be give to City of Aiken residents.

Applications must be received no later than Sept. 6. Participants must attend at least eight classes to pass the Citizens Public Safety Academy.

A background check will be performed on all applicants. Applicants with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds will not be accepted.

"This is the first time we have done this on this scale," Mahoney said. "This is about building relationships and reaching out to the community to help bridge any gaps there may be and answer any questions they may have."

Applications are available at Aiken Public Safety headquarters located at 251 Laurens St. N.W., or on the City of Aiken website at: www.cityofaikensc.gov/index.php/government/departments/public-safety-department/public-safety-department-library/193.

Applicants can submit their applications via email tobharm@cityofaikensc.gov or send completed applications to: The Aiken Department of Public Safety, ATTN: Lt. Harm, P.O. BOX 1177, Aiken, SC 29802.
