An Irmo man was arrested over the weekend for unlawful weapons possession following a shooting on Hampton Avenue Saturday morning that sent one man a Georgia hospital with a gunshot wound.
Police have still not charged the suspect in connection with the shooting, only with being armed illegally, police said.
Tyree Hugie, 27, of Firetower Ridge, was jailed early Saturday morning.
Police have not connected anyone to the shooting, but said he was found in the area with a weapon after the victim, a 28-year-old Kellog Drive man, was hospitalized with a leg wound.
Rahmel Oliver, 28, was taken to Georgia Health Services.
Around 1 a.m., a police lieutenant with Aiken Public Safety spoke with security working at the American Legion, 602 Hampton Ave., where shots had been fired.
Police said they learned that a white Ford Expeditions was in the area during the drive-by shooting, and stopped a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident.
Hugie was the driver, police said.
He was detained and questioned.
Security also said a maroon Ford Expedition was involved, but left the area and was not found.
During the traffic stop on the white SUV, Hugie admitted to having a gun in his vehicle. In the police found a 9mm handgun under the driver's seat.
He was charged with the weapons possession and jailed.
At this time, investigators have not made any arrests for what will be an attempted murder charge.
Police have not said whether Hugie is under further investigation.
