L. Whitfield (Whit) White
SPRINGFIELD, S.C. – L. Whitfield (Whit) White, Jr., 65, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at his home on Edisto Island. Born March 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Ethel Pender White Cofer and Luther Whitfield White, Sr.
Whitfield attended Abra-ham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA and served in the South Carolina National Guard from 1967-1973. He worked with J.F. Cleckley and Company in Orangeburg, SC from 1967 until 1985, and retired from Westinghouse Savannah River Site in 2005. After retirement, he returned to farm his home place in Springfield.
Whitfield loved being outdoors, especially on the coast, where he enjoyed boating and fishing. His grandchildren brought a twinkle to his eye and a smile to his face - they were truly the light of his life. He didn’t go anywhere without his Jack Russell, Lucy, by his side. Whitfield never met a stranger, was never at a loss for words and would give you the shirt off his back for the asking.
Whitfield is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kristie and Gary Lundy, of Lexington; son and daughter-in-law, Luther Whitfield White, III (Whitney) and Bobbie of Springfield; sister and brother-in-law, Loxie and Leonard Brown of Edisto Beach, niece, Daphne Brown Martin (Jamie) of Edisto Beach. He also leaves behind his three adored grandchildren, Brad Lundy and Jeff Lundy of Lexington, and Briana White of Orangeburg, and great-nephew, Trevor Brown of Edisto Beach. Whitfield is also survived by his loving companion of 18 years, Jean Bishop, of Evans GA, and her daughters, Dawn McKnight and Amy McKeen, and grandchildren, Haley Weldon, Amber Weldon, Nicholas Delaney and Jacob McKeen.
The family will receive friends at Folk Funeral Home Inc. and Crematory in Williston from 5-7 pm Wednesday evening, August 15, 2012. A memorial service will be held immediately after visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be private. The family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 17 Executive Park, Suite 115, Atlanta, GA 30329-2012 or the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
Whitfield will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
