An untoward situation while on vacation in the Bahamas was a life-altering experience for personal fitness trainer Kenny Ray.
A body builder, Ray would blow out his knee, began losing a significant amount of muscle in his leg, and would later have to undergo surgery.
Ray was now faced with an adverse challenge and some uncertainty after sustaining the injury.
“I had to start all over, and during that process, my therapist said, ‘If you want longevity in this business, you need to learn how to train adults with issues because now you have one.’”
The operation is located at 5280 Woodside Executive Court in the Woodside Executive Park. Clients range in age from 17 to 86, and training programs are developed to fit each of their individualized needs, and they will work with both personal trainers.
“As we get older, everyone has issues, and we’re finding that out now,” said Ray. “Someone may walk in the door and say, ‘I’m ready to work out, my doctor gave me clearance, but you know I have this shoulder thing, and maybe you can help me out with that.’ We’re learning how to spot problems, how to movement screen those problems, and how to alleviate most of them. We’re not physical therapists, but we understand them.”
The training programs are designed to avoid what’s detrimental for the individual, and place an emphasis on what’s going to help improve mobility and flexibility in certain areas, Cunningham said.
“The source of the problem isn’t always where the pain is,” said Cunningham. “If there is a problem, we want to identify the source. We want to program the right exercises or mobility exercises, be they strength training exercises or mobility exercises, to try and get that person better.”
Ray and Cunningham work together closely to develop workout routines for their clients, keeping the individual’s health and nutrition in mind. Cunningham apprenticed with Ray, and would go onto get his national certification.
“In some cases, the workouts are designed to be taken by the client when they go out of town,” said Cunningham. “I think that’s what sets us apart.”
The trainers address movement, and use a movement pattern as part of the training program, Ray said.
“Your body is the machine,” said Ray. “We want you to perform on your feet, so that when you walk out of here, you can perform on your feet.”
