ADPS asking for help to find missing man
The Aiken Department of Public Safety is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 52-year-old Wesley Jerome Quiller.
Quiller was last seen leaving his home on Fairfield Street in Aiken on July 23. He was driving a white Dodge Caravan bearing South Carolina license plate CXR385.
Quiller is a black male, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 280 pounds, with brown eyes and short, greying hair.
Public Safety asks that anyone with information that may help locate Quiller contact Det. Margaret Moore at (803) 642-7684.
Individuals could also call Crimestoppers of the Midlands at 1 (888) CRIME – SC. Callers can remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Army engineers corps announces schedule
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has announced its seasonal closing schedule for day use areas and campgrounds at J. Strom Thurmond Lake.
The following day-use areas will close for the season on Sept. 4: Amity Day-Use Area; Big Hart Day-Use Area; Gill Point Day-Use Area and Parksville Day-Use Area. However, boat ramps located at these recreation areas will remain open throughout the winter for public use.
Below Dam South Carolina Recreation Area and Clarks Hill Day-Use Area will remain open year-round, along with portions of Lake Springs Day-Use Area and West Dam Day-Use Area.
The following campgrounds will close for the season on Sept. 3: Broad River Campground, Clay Hill Campground, and Mt. Carmel Campground.
The following campgrounds will close for the season on Sept. 30: Big Hart Campground, Hawe Creek Campground, Hesters Ferry Campground, Modoc Campground, Raysville Campground, Ridge Road Campground and Winfield Campground.
Bussey Point Campground, LeRoy’s Ferry Campground, and portions of Petersburg Campground will continue to remain open year-round.
The Corps of Engineers will announce seasonal openings of these day-use areas and campgrounds as the next recreation season approaches.
Aiken Democrats to host fundraiser on Thursday
The Aiken County Democratic Party will host a hot dog fundraiser at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center pavilion Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Probate Judge Sue Roe, the Democratic incumbent, will attend the event and meet with the public. She faces opposition in the November general election from Republican Jane Page Thompson.
Democratic party officials said they have invited S.C. Sen. Nikki Setlzer of Lexington to appear. His District 26 includes part of Aiken County. Setzler is opposed in November by Aiken Republican Deedee Vaughters.
Moses Mims, the Aiken Democratic Party’s communications director, said Aiken City Council members Lessie Price and Gail Diggs are expected to attend the event as well.
Aiken NAACP plans registration drive
The Aiken Branch NAACP is sponsoring a voter education and registration drive at the Cumberland AME Church Fellowship Hall Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Richard Johnson, the NAACP’s political action chairman, will discuss for new voters how voting machines work. People can register to vote at the meeting.
The church is located at 111 Kershaw St. N.E. between Richland and Park avenues. The fellowship hall also can be accessed from Union Street.
Gunsmithing shop to offer basic gun class
The Hunter’s Den, a new gunsmithing shop downtown, is offering a class on Aug. 30 as a precursor to the more formal gun ownership classes. The one-hour class is free and will cover topics like the difference between pistols and handguns, ammunition (types and calibers) and safe gun storage. The class will start at 7 p.m. at the Hunter’s Den, 108 Laurens St. N.W., beside Your Rich Aunt’s Attic. Its main entrance is located off the small City of Aiken parking lot, across Richland Avenue from Hotel Aiken. The class can hold between 15 and 20 people, ages 15 and older. Those younger than 18 need parental permission to attend. Those interested in attending are asked to register ahead of time by calling 648-3000 or by emailing Lewis at cprifles@aol.com.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety will be holding a Citizen’s Public Safety Academy starting Sept. 13. This will be a nine-week program consisting of one class each Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. All instructors are members of the public safety profession and will present material on the following topics: basic patrol functions, firefighting, use of force (lethal, less-lethal), community policing, traffic safety, criminal investigations and more. Applications must be received no later than Sept. 6. Participants must attend at least eight classes to pass the Citizen’s Public Safety Academy. A background check will be performed on all applicants. Applicants with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds will not be accepted. Applications are available at Aiken Public Safety headquarters located at 251 Laurens Street N.W. or on the City of Aiken website at: http://www.cityofaikensc.gov/index.php/government/departments/public-safety-department/public-safety-department-library/193.
