Not sure little Johnny really made the A on his spelling test he claimed he did - even though he conveniently lost the graded test? And does little Suzy really not have homework tonight, which is her reason for being able to hang out with her friends?
Now parents can find out that test score and the homework assignment with a click of a mouse.
In the past few years, the Aiken County School District has been upgrading its online programs, a move that opens up a world of possibilities for teachers, students and parents.
On Sunday, Rob Novit, education reporter for the Aiken Standard, looked at how the district’s online presence has grown and what’s now available. The district staff charged with developing technology programs for the district promise “some cool things” coming up, and considering their enthusiasm, it’s a good bet we’ll continue to be wowed.
As recently as 2008, the district didn’t have a website. Now the comprehensive website is a portal to everything from calendars, bus schedules, state test scores, student daily progress, budgets, teacher resources, curriculum information, special programs, the list goes on and on.
These tools are there for the taking, all it takes is a computer to access it. Technology is rapidly moving in to classrooms and even the youngest students are exposed to it on a daily basis.
There is a concern that children and parents from less affluent homes won’t have the access to this technology that they need to keep up.
It can be difficult, but there are options. The schools and public libraries are wonderful resources, with up-to-date computers available for the public to use. It’s not as convenient as having a computer in the home, but it’s a good option for those without.
We applaud the Aiken County School District for embracing and supporting technology that gives our students, and the entire community, the tools needed to compete in this fast-paced world.
