John ‘J. L.’ Gleaton



BLACKVILLE – Funeral services for John Lawton “J.L.” Gleaton, 88, of Blackville will be held two p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2012 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from six to eight p.m., Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Jimmy and Debbie Gleaton, 1456 Double Pond Road, Blackville. J. L. passed away Thursday, August 30, 2012.

Born in Orangeburg County, he was a son of the late Jessie James Gleaton and Lily Mae Chavis Gleaton and was married for 64 years to the late Delores Williams Gleaton. He was known as Catfish John and in 1993 received Father of the Year Award in Barnwell County, loved to fish, was a farmer and was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Survivors include daughters, Helen (Floyd) Bruner of Denmark, Shirley (Bruce) Baker of Clarks Hill, Nevalin (Steve) Davis of Blackville, Ann (Dennis) Pernell of Blackville, Laura (Knox) Hambright of Blacksburg; sons, John (Peggy) Gleaton of Denmark, Jerry (Jean) Gleaton of Williamston, Jimmy (Debbie) Gleaton of Blackville, adopted son, Norman (Roberta) Williams of Blackville; sister, Inez G. Williams of Williston and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, James Gleaton, Monroe Gleaton, Larry Lee Gleaton.
