Officers removed two dogs from an Aiken home Tuesday after their owner moved from the home and abandoned the animals, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
The landlord of the home on Solann Street told officers Tuesday that his tenant, the owner of the dogs, moved from the property and "abandoned" the dogs, according to an incident report. One dog was found in the backyard and a second dog was found in a small kennel in the bedroom.
The landlord said he tried to call his tenant several times over the last few weeks but that she wouldn't return his calls, police said. She was also two months behind on her rent, and the power and water in the home had been turned off.
Officers spoke with a neighbor who said she had been feeding the outside dog, and wished to remain anonymous.
"The neighbor stated she felt bad for the dog because it appeared to be starving," the report states.
The dogs were removed from the home and taken to the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare.
Both dogs appeared to be underweight and didn't have access to water, police said. The landlord gave officers a number to contact the owner, but they were unsuccessful in reaching her.
