Fox creek 38, branchville 15
NORTH AUGUSTA - Fox Creek Coach Russ Schneider thought the Predators might have to throw a lot against Branchville Friday, but instead they got their running game going in a 38-15 victory.
Quarterback Deondre Baskett and running back Blake Crawford both scored twice, and Zabain Adams raced 84 yards for a touchdown as Fox Creek got its first win of the season.
The victory may have been costly, however, as quarterback/defensive back Trey Mock went down with back and leg injuries just before the half. Family members took him to a hospital for evaluation. Mock had been splitting time behind center with Baskett.
"We hadn't been running the ball, and were trying to use Trey and Deondre, swapping out series to see if that could make a difference," Schneider said. "Trey got hurt and Deondre did a great job going in. We just hope Trey's okay and bounces back. But we got some great play from Blake and Zabain, and some of the young guys ran well too."
Baskett got the Predators on the scoreboard in the first period with a 15-yard run. On Fox Creek's next possession deep in its own territory, Adams took a handoff and raced to the left side, seemingly pinned in. He then found an extra burst down the sideline to complete an 84-yard scoring run for an apparently comfortable 13-0 advantage.
An exchange of touchdowns late in the second quarter proved pivotal. A bad snap on a Fox Creek punt gave the Yellow Jackets good field position, and they drove the Predators three and a first down.
Fox Creek then recovered a fumble and took over possession, only to lose their own fumble, recovered in the end zone by Branchville.
Suddenly, it was 13-7 with 1:43 left in the half, but Fox Creek needed just 43 seconds to score again. Baskett led the Predators down the field to the Jacket 27. With time becoming a factor, he rolled to his right and even his coaches thought he was headed out of bounds. Then Baskett danced along the sideline and cut back inside to get to the endzone, providing a 19-7 cushion at halftime.
A nifty 33-yard run by Crawford early in the third put Fox Creek up 25-7. Branchville did get a one-yard plunge from quarterback Dalton Ethridge, but Crawford responded with a spectacular 42-year run, eluding several defenders along the way.
Now 1-2 on the season, Fox Creek won't play again until Thursday, Sept. 13, taking on Augusta Christian.
