Safety debated in proposed pipeline
The debate is heating up on the proposed local pipeline.
It would be a 360-mile fuel pipeline that will run from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, through Belton, South Carolina, and then through North Augusta and on to Jacksonville, Florida. The pipeline could carry a capacity of 167,000 barrels of fuel per day.
Over the past few weeks, Kinder Morgan - the company proposing the pipeline - has held public hearings on the topic, gauging the reaction of those who would have the pipeline on their land.

Bill would require S.C. to recognize Ga. weapon permits
Two bills making their way through the legislature - including one filed by an Aiken County representative - would allow concealed weapons permit holders from states with lower educational and safety requirements to carry their weapons in South Carolina.
Rep. Bill Hixon, R-North Augusta, on March 5 filed H. 3799, which would require South Carolina to recognize concealed weapons permits, or CWPs, issued by Georgia and North Carolina.

Board looks to improve athletic facilities across district
Addressing the most issues at the most schools as quickly as possible will be the focus of a subcommittee approved by the Aiken County School Board on Tuesday to look at athletic facilities' needs at the district's seven high schools.
Finding new ways to fund improvements to athletic facilities and prioritizing each school's needs are the subcommittee's goals, said Board member Richard Hazen.

Glowing Ember gives Dogwood Stable's Campbell first City of Aiken Trophy win
Cot Campbell had been waiting a long time for one of Dogwood Stable's horses to capture the City of Aiken Cup, and on Saturday it finally happened.
"This is great," said the Dogwood president after Glowing Ember romped to a six-length victory in the Aiken Trials' feature race at the Aiken Training Track. "We came here 29 years ago, and we had been struggling to win it. But now we've got it, and we're delighted."

Cothran inducted into Journalism Hall of Fame
Samuel A. Cothran, former publisher and editor of the Aiken Standard, was inducted into the S.C. Journalism Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Members of his family accepted the recognition in his honor at the S.C. Press Association's Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation in Myrtle Beach.
