ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Services are set this week for a Korean War soldier from the Upstate who was captured in 1951.

The remains of 18-year-old Pfc. John Bowers of Piedmont were identified in December.

Mary Clardy told the Anderson Independent-Mail that the funeral for her brother will be Saturday, with burial with full military honors planned for Greenville Memorial Gardens in Piedmont.

Clardy was born three years after her brother died.

Bowers was captured by the Chinese army in 1951. His family only knew that he was missing in action until Pentagon officials confirmed that this remains had been identified at a former prisoner of war camp. The remains were among 387 discovered there.

Clardy said her mother hoped for her son's but she died in 1997 without knowing what happened.
