An Aiken man was jailed for giving false information when he apparently pulled a word from the newspaper he was holding and gave that word as his name, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Terry Taylor, 39, of Myna Bird Lane, was charged with giving false information to police and placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained Wednesday afternoon.
Officers responded to a call about a suspicious person in Eustis Park about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and were told the suspect in the basketball court was "yelling and screaming about drugs," according to an incident report. Officers asked Taylor what he was doing and he responded he "was just sitting and drinking his soda." They informed him no one was allowed in the park after sundown.
Officers asked Taylor his name and he responded "Lament," police said, adding that Taylor had a copy of the Aiken Standard in his hand with a headline containing the word "lament."
When officers asked Taylor for his legal name or last name, he responded that he didn't have one, police said. He provided a birth date, but when officers tried to get an accurate name, he responded with "incoherent statements about the government and the state of the world."
Officers confirmed Taylor's identity through the jail database using the information he provided, and became belligerent when they tried to arrest him.
