The South Carolina Highway Patrol is seeking the public's help in locating a vehicle in a fatal hit and run case.
Carl Furillo Polite Jr., 40, of North Augusta, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that happened just before midnight Friday, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. Polite was struck by a white or light in color tractor trailer with an enclosed tanker after he was ejected from his vehicle, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. There may be no visible damage to that vehicle.
The crash occurred on I-20 east near mile marker 5. According to witnesses, Polite was traveling at a high rate of speed in a 2008 Lexus when he struck the rear of a 2012 Ford Fusion that was also traveling east on I-20.
The driver of the Ford had two passengers in her vehicle but no one was injured, according to Carlton.
After striking the Ford, Polite's vehicle overturned several times, and he was ejected onto the roadway where he was struck by the tractor trailer also traveling east, said Carlton.
Polite died from multiple body trauma and is scheduled for autopsy in Newberry.
