Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Savannah River Remediation played major roles in making this year's edition of the American Heart Association's CSRA Heart Walk the most successful ever.
The March 7 event, which was held on the North Augusta Greeneway, raised $575,000 and had more than 5,000 walkers. Both figures were records, and the amount collected exceeded the Heart Walk's goal by $50,000.
There were 1- and 3-mile walks, and teams from more than 50 CSRA companies participated.
The funds raised will fund education, programs and lifesaving research in the efforts to prevent heart disease and strokes.
"This was a collaborative effort," said this year's Heart Walk chairman, Wallis Spangler, who is a senior vice president at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. "I would like to extend deep appreciation to the many corporate sponsors, donors and the CSRA community for the overwhelming generosity."
Georgia Regents University/GR Health was the top fundraiser, collecting $117,334. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions ranked second with $78,855, Doctors Hospital was third with $34,236, Savannah River Remediation was fourth with $20,242 and Columbia County (Georgia) was fifth with $18,926.
Bill Macuch, of Macuch Steel Products, was the leading individual fundraiser and the top fundraiser in the Executive Challenge, collecting $7,300.
