An Aiken man and a juvenile were detained after they were found breaking into vehicles on Kline Street early Sunday, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Kartel D'Marco Smith, 17, of Brucewood Street, was charged with two counts each of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and simple larceny. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained Monday afternoon.
A juvenile was also detained and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Officers were called to Kline Street about 1:50 a.m. Sunday after a caller reported seeing a suspicious man walking around who tried to hide when someone passed by, according to an incident report. An officer arriving saw a suspect in a brown hoodie standing next to a white truck with a door open, and as the officer approached, a second suspect exited the vehicle and both began running toward Morgan Street.
The two suspects split up but officers were able to detain them. Smith had two sets of keys he said he found in a yard on Kline Street, police said. The juvenile suspect had a work identification card and property that belonged to another resident on Kline Street.
Two homeowners on Kline Street later identified the items as belonging to them, police said.
