SC Senate panel approves closing DUI loophole on mopeds

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Senate panel has approved a measure seeking to close a loophole in South Carolina law and make it illegal to drive a moped while drunk.

A Senate transportation subcommittee on Tuesday sent to the full panel a measure that defines mopeds as motor vehicles and not motorcycles.

Republican Sen. Greg Hembree of North Myrtle Beach says there is a glitch in the existing law.

Hembree says the subcommittee will hear testimony in several weeks on a host of other measures dealing with mopeds. They include whether riders must wear reflective vests, have a flashing light, or operate only on certain parts of the roads. Other bills deal with registration and insurance.
