Feds, state investigate removal of osprey nest on SC coast

WANDO, S.C. (AP) — State wildlife officials are investigating whether an osprey nest with eggs in it has been removed from a utility pole northeast of Charleston.

Area media outlets report that the nest was removed late last week as part of work to build a new bridge on state Highway 41 over the Wando River.

A spokesman for South Carolina Electric & Gas said there were no eggs in the nest.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating.

Disturbing an osprey nest that has eggs can mean a $15,000 fine.

Jim Elliott of The Center for Birds of Prey in nearby Awendaw said nearby residents called him concerned about the nest.

DHEC to begin issuing daily ozone forecasts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State environmental officials are going to start issuing regular forecasts for ground-level ozone.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control will begin releasing the figure on a daily basis, starting Tuesday.

DHEC air quality chief Myra Reece says ozone is South Carolina's most widespread air-quality concern during the warmer months. She says high ozone concentrations generally happen on hot sunny days when the air is stagnant.

Vehicles and lawn equipment contribute to more than half of the state's ozone levels.

Reece says people can help make air cleaner and healthier by carpooling, driving less and using outdoor equipment in the evenings.

Authorities tell local media outlets that 76-year-old Frankie Haney was shot twice at her apartment Saturday. Haney died Monday afternoon at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Police had earlier charged her 84-year-old husband Clifford Irby Haney with attempted murder.

There had been no change in the charges as of late Monday. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
