Two Augusta men were detained after officers found counterfeit money and printing equipment in a car during a traffic stop, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Jermelle Furse, 23, of Picquet Avenue, was charged with forgery, driving with no driver's license, no vehicle license and no proof of insurance.
Kjuan Cortez Few, 24, of Perry Avenue, was charged with forgery. Both were placed in the Aiken County detention center, where they remained Wednesday morning.
An officer saw a Chevrolet Caprice with paper tags leaving a motel on Richland Avenue about 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to an incident report. He recognized the vehicle and knew it previously had a different paper tag on it.
There were six people in the car. The driver, Furse, told the officer he didn't have his license but was licensed out of Georgia, police said. He was asked to step out, and when asked if there was anything illegal in the car, said no. He denied the officer's request to search the vehicle, and was placed under arrest for no license and no proof of ownership.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found eight $20 bills under the driver's seat that were believed to be counterfeit, police said. They also found printer cartridges on the floor, a printer and resume paper that felt similar to the fake bills.
All the passengers were asked, and only Few said he had any money, and gave officers the $20, the report states. The bill contained the same serial number as the bills found under the seat.
Few told officers he didn't know the bill was fake, police said. Furse said the printing equipment was his, but that he had no idea about the counterfeit bills.
