Reeves tosses first no-hitter for The Citadel in 13 years

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — James Reeves struck out 14 while throwing the first no-hitter for The Citadel in 13 years, blanking Mercer 4-0 on Thursday night.

It was the sixth no-hitter in school history, and first since T.A. Fulmer tossed one against East Tennessee State on March 29, 2002. Reeves (5-1) tied his season high for strikeouts, allowing only three baserunners to get into scoring position.

The junior left-hander from Summerville walked five, but Mercer didn't have more than one runner on base in any inning. Reeves' performance helped snap a six-game losing streak for The Citadel (15-13).

Reeves issued a leadoff walk in the ninth before striking out the next two batters. On a 2-2 pitch, Jackson Ware hit a foul pop that second baseman Jacob Watcher ran down in The Citadel bullpen to seal the no-hitter.

William Kinney drove in two runs against Eric Nyquist (4-2), who took the loss for Mercer (18-13).

Woman shot, killed at traffic light in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a woman is dead after she was shot while waiting in her car at a traffic light in Summerville.

Local media outlets report that the shooting happened shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nesbit says 57-year-old Lynn Harrison was going to meet her son for lunch when she was shot in the neck by another driver in what was apparently a random shooting.

Police say Jimi Redman Jr. was arrested a short time later and charged with murder. Investigators say the shooting appeared to be random.

It wasn't known if Redman had a lawyer.

Almost 3,200 SC Boeing workers eligible in union vote

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley says she will keep urging South Carolina Boeing workers to reject a union in the weeks before this month's union vote.Area media outlets report that Haley spoke against the Machinists union during a Wednesday appearance in Summerville. Haley has said South Carolina workers don't need a middleman between them and their employers.

She says her message for the union is to get out, that Boeing came to South Carolina without them and does not need them now.

The National Labor Relations Board has set April 22 for the vote.

Boeing has given the board the names and addresses of 3,175 Boeing production workers in North Charleston eligible to vote.

The union says it will be talking to workers at their homes and at the union hall.
