The public will have an opportunity to comment during an annual assessment of construction activities at the Savannah River Site's MOX facility.
The meeting will be 6 to 7 p.m. on April 16 at the Applied Research Center, 301 Gateway Drive in New Ellenton.
The meeting will include officials from the MOX contractor, CB&I AREVA MOX Services, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission, or NRC - an agency that makes sure projects fall within proper regulations to continue construction and operations.
According to a notice, the public is invited to observe the meeting where the NRC go over the technical aspects of the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility - a facility that is part of a nonproliferation agreement with Russia to dispose of 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium.
"This is a Category 1 meeting," officials wrote. "The public is invited to observe this meeting and will have one or more opportunities to communicate with the NRC after the business portion of the meeting but before the meeting is adjourned."
Last month, the NRC completed a review of MOX and determined that the facility was being constructed "in a manner that preserved public health and safety and was consistent with the Commission's rules and regulations."
From a regulatory standpoint, MOX has been on par, but issues with the controversial program have lied in funding and delays. The program is projected to cost billions over the initial cost with deadlines for completion pushed back from 2016 to the 2020s.
The project is in line to receive $345 million in funding next fiscal year - the same amount it currently has after threats of being placed in a cold standby.
