Garden Club of Aiken gets public library ready for spring

Members of the Garden Club of Aiken met recently for a spring bed cleanup at the Aiken Public Library.

The library beds were adopted as a Garden Club of Aiken project in 2007. Since then, the club has worked with the county to keep the beds in good order. Since then, the Garden Club of Aiken added foundation shrubs and perennials to soften the entrance and make it more cheerful, a press release said.

Krista Lamar and Leslie Garnett are the co-chairwomen of the project. They schedule club workdays at the library to ensure the beds look neat. Despite the rainy weather, Garnett and Lamar ensured many hands were present to tackle beds that needed much attention after a long winter.

"It was a big project that happened quite quickly with the number of club members who helped," Lamar said.

Garnett welcomed the opportunity to have an informal planning session. "We would love to see the addition of more plants that have year round interest. We'd also like to add more native plants in keeping with the state garden club president's theme."

The Garden Club of Aiken was founded in 1924 by Mrs. Sheffield Phelps of Rose Hill. The club has a long history of civic beautification projects in Aiken. The Garden Club of Aiken is a member of the Aiken Garden Club Council and a founding club of the Garden Club of South Carolina. They are celebrating their 90th anniversary.

"It is wonderful to be part of this club especially hands on," said club member Desiree Voegele.
