Presidential candidate Cruz makes campaign stop in Aiken

Less than two weeks after kicking off his campaign for the White House, Sen. Ted Cruz made a stop in Aiken on Saturday to talk with residents about his goals for the country if he is elected president.

Cruz, R-Texas, told a crowd of nearly 300 people in Newberry Hall that he wants to reignite "the promise of America."

"It begins with the revolutionary idea this country was built on, which is that our rights don't come from the government - they come from God Almighty," he said.

Aiken's Boots, Bridles, and Britches has 'heartbreaking' closing

One of Aiken's largest equestrian businesses is ending its ride this month, going out of business after a run of almost eight years on East Pine Log Road. Boots, Bridles, and Britches is closing its Aiken location, as well as its shop in Grovetown, Georgia.

The business, with a theme of serving "horse and rider," started out on strong footing but ran into trouble with the economic downturn of recent years and did not recover, in the assessment of Heather Pifer, manager of the Aiken store. She described the situation as "heartbreaking."

One dead, one jailed after head-on collision on S.C. 421

A Belvedere woman was charged with drunken driving Friday after a head-on collision that left one person dead, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Suzanne Cook, 49, of Belvedere, has been charged with felony DUI, according to Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol.

Child drowns at Aiken home

An Aiken child is dead after drowning Saturday.

Michael Melton Jr., 3, was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday at Aiken Regional Medical Center, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. There is no evidence of foul play or trauma to the child, Carlton added.
