Men charged in SC with stealing fuel in 4 states

SALUDA, S.C. (AP) — Two Florida men are in custody in South Carolina charged with stealing 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel from convenience stores in four states.

Media outlets report that deputies in Saluda County in western South Carolina took the men into custody on April 1.

Authorities say that 48-year-old Cesar Jesus Caballero of Miami and 44-year-old Julio Cesar Fernandez of Hialeah, Florida, are charged in the case.

Authorities allege the two men took gas from stores in South Carolina as well as in Alabama, Georgia and Texas.

Deputies allege the two used a homemade device to divert the fuel after the pump was started in the store. It was not immediately known if the two men had attorneys.

Attorney: SC officer who shot suspect felt threatened

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The attorney for a North Charleston police officer who shot and killed a motorist says his client felt threatened when the driver tried to overpower the officer and got his Taser.

Attorney David Aylor released a statement on Monday on behalf of his client, Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager.

The attorney says Slager feels he properly followed all procedures before resorting to deadly force.

Authorities say the incident happened last Saturday morning when Slager stopped a car because of a broken tail light.

They say the motorist got out of his car and the officer used his Taser but it didn't stop the motorist. The two then struggled and the motorist got a hold of the stun gun.

The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Walter Lamer Scott of Charleston.

Bicyclist struck and killed on Marlboro County road

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man riding a bicycle on one of Marlboro County's busiest roads has been struck and killed by a car.

Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown told media outlets that 47-year-old Leonard Thomas died almost immediately after he was struck Sunday afternoon on state Highway 38 near Bennettsville.

Troopers say Thomas was riding in a paved median when he was struck by a driver turning left.

The Highway Patrol says 21-year-old Rebecca Krouse was charged with reckless driving. It wasn't known if she had a lawyer.
