Officers will obtain warrants for forgery for two Jackson women who allegedly stole checks from an Aiken man they provided transportation for, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
The two women tried to cash a $1,700 check in the drive-through lane of a Whiskey Road bank on Tuesday, according to an incident report. The check was written from the account of the 68-year-old victim.
The teller told the women they needed to come into the bank and provide proper identification to cash the check, police said. The women came in, and one of them provided identification. The teller told the suspects she would have to call the man whose name was listed on the account before cashing a check of that amount.
The two suspects said they would call the man but left the bank a few minutes later, police said. The victim told officers he was familiar with the suspects because he met them at Wal-Mart several weeks ago.
The victim doesn't drive anymore, and the suspects told him they could take him to town when he needed to go, the report states. Both women have been to his home several times, and he purchased about $350 in merchandise for the two women at Target a week ago.
The man said he hadn't given the suspects any of his checks. Bank officials told police one of the suspects deposited a check from the victim's account into her own account in North Augusta last month.
