Dupont Landing - as a neighborhood near Aiken High School - is a work in progress, with a mixture of public and private funding going into its development.

Its grand opening and ribbon cutting is set at 11 a.m. Friday morning.

The event will mark the completion of the project's construction phase, with "44 three-bedroom single-family homes offered in both one-story garden styles, as well as two-story townhouses," according to promotional material. It notes that the project's boosters include Second Baptist Church, Nehemiah Community Revitalization Corporation, Palmetto Architectural Group and other organizations.

Tom Faulkner, with the Nehemiah organization, based in Greer, described this week's event as "a huge step," in terms of Second Baptist's effort to create a model community.

"We have been working with Second Baptist for over 10 years," he said, adding that the effort included bringing Clemson real-estate students to visit the site in 2006 to prepare a master plan for the 70-acre site of which Dupont Landing is a part. The recession has been among challenges to "a long-term strategy to create a community of homeowners in the northern section of Aiken."

Ownership of the homes is a key concept, Faulkner added. "All 44 houses are under the same strategic scheme, and we will be working with the residents toward that goal, beginning immediately. We'll be talking about home ownership."

Features include such things as fully furnished kitchens, dishwashers, garbage disposals, washer and dryer connections (as well as on-site laundry facilities), private driveways and a clubhouse, fitness center, playground and a sheltered gazebo.

Details are available from Dupont Landing's office, at 803-226-0055. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays.
