School Board to discuss preliminary budget

Members of the Aiken County Board of Education will hear a report of the preliminary 2015-16 budget at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office at 1000 Brookhaven Drive.

Many estimates in the budget are based on the S.C. House of Representatives version of the 2015-16 general appropriations bill. The General Fund revenue reflects a higher Education Finance Act allocation compared to 2014-15, based on estimates provided by the S.C. Department of Education. The increase is based in part to the proposed increase in the base student cost from $2,120 to $2,220.

Current property tax revenues reflect an increase from growth based on recent assessed values. Operating millage remains unchanged in the preliminary version of the budget at 141.6 mills.

General Fund expenditures reflect a step increase for all employees based on years of service. The budget also reflects increases in insurance premiums, retirement contributions and allocations for charter schools. All these items must be covered in the budget.

The board also will hear an update on the district's strategic plan.

Each school district must develop a five-year district strategic plan. As part of a continuous improvement process, each district is required to submit an update to its strategic plan every spring.
