SC Sheriff: 2 deputies justified in killing man with 5 shots
BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (AP) — The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says two deputies were justified in fatally shooting a man as officers tried to serve a drug-related search warrant at his home.
Spartanburg Sheriff's Lt. Kevin Bobo said a department review Thursday determined the officers followed established policies and were cleared to return to work next week. An investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division continues.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 28-year-old Phillip Michael Burgess of Boiling Springs was shot twice in the back and three more times in the head, neck and groin.
Bobo said after the April 9 shooting that Burgess became belligerent with the officers, grabbed a gun off the top of the refrigerator and pointed it at the officers, who then shot him.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Twenty-two combat veterans from South Carolina are finishing their 175-mile trip from Columbia to Charleston by water.
The group left Columbia last Friday on the River Challenge to help increase awareness of the veterans who suffer post-traumatic stress disorder. Organizers say 22 veterans with the disorder die by their own hand every day.
Following the weeklong trip, camping along the way, the veterans are arriving Friday at the boating center on the campus of The Citadel.
The group of veterans includes men and women in their 30s and 40s who served primarily in Iraq or Afghanistan.
