The Aiken Design Review Board will meet Tuesday to address their concerns regarding the proposed changes to building height in Aiken's downtown area.

The discussion will be held in a 5:30 p.m. public work session in room 204 in the Municipal Building, 214 Park Ave.

Local hotel owner Neel Shah is proposing to gut and revitalize Hotel Aiken on Richland Avenue. The hotel portion will stay the same, but Shah is proposing to build a six-floor addition on the hotel's Newberry Street side.

Those proposed changes include queen- and king-size rooms, a dining area and a possible exercise room on the bottom floor.

The City has used its current height rule since 1971 that no building be constructed higher than about 50 feet. City officials are requesting that the height ordinance be changed to 65 or 70 feet.

According to the agenda, the Board's main concern is the building height change in the Old Aiken Overlay District.

The Board will follow their work session with a 6:30 p.m. regular meeting in Council Chambers.
