CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A new report shows that South Carolina has agreed to repay the federal government $1.6 million it overcharged under a special Medicaid program.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that more than 6,000 South Carolinians with intellectual disabilities receive services through a special program called the Intellectual and related disabilities waiver.

The program pays for vision and dental care, drugs and medical supplies but not for housing. However the report finds that during the 2010 fiscal year, the state charged Medicaid $1.6 million for room and board.

Lois Park Mole of the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs says the state made an accounting error.
