A man was detained after a shooting was reported at the New Holland Fire Department on Tuesday evening.
Chad Barker was arrested and charged with two counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. Nobody was injured.
Deputies responded to emergency radio and 911 calls regarding a shooting at the fire department on Camp Rawls Road. When deputies arrived, fire department personnel had apprehended the suspect.
Witnesses said Barker drove into the parking lot of the fire department about 6:30 p.m. and exited his vehicle. He then discharged a weapon into his own vehicle. He proceeded to point the weapon at bystanders in the parking lot, according to investigators.
Fire department members approached Barker and were able to get the weapon away from him without a struggle.
Deputies were then called, and Barker was taken into custody.
He was transported to an area hospital for a self-inflicted laceration to his head before he was taken to the Aiken County detention center.
Barker was grossly intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to investigators.
New Holland Fire Department Chief Dennis Jackson commended those involved in handling the situation.
"It was a very stressful 15 minutes but everyone acted as they should have," said Jackson.
