A male suspect in the homicide of a Trenton man was taken into custody early Sunday morning.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office reported that the Buckingham County Sheriff's Department in Virginia arrested Donald George Hurtekant Jr. without incident. The 36-year-old Graniteville resident was placed in the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, Virginia, until arrangements could be made to extradite him back to Aiken County.

Hurtekant was wanted for murder and first-degree burglary in connection with the death of Claude G. Ward, 81. Ward suffered injuries from a beating, and Aiken County Sheriff's Office investigators believe he died the night of May 5. They went to the 400 block of Polks Lane in Trenton on May 6 to look into a suspicious death.

A neighbor of Ward's called 911 and said Ward was on the floor and unresponsive when she went to check on him. Investigators discovered signs of forced entry to the residence.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office later received information that Hurtekant was at a specific address in Virginia from a tip and contacted the Buckingham County Sheriff's Department.

The Sheriff's Department responded to that address, which was in its jurisdiction, at midnight Sunday.

The second suspect in the homicide, Sandra Ann Marie Evans, 33, of Graniteville, wasn't with Hurtekant when he was found. She is wanted for accessory to murder after the fact.

Anyone with information about Evans is asked to call the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at 803-646-6811 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372).
