GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A popular giraffe born at the Greenville Zoo back in 2012 is leaving for a zoo in Toronto, Canada.
Greenville Zoo officials announced on Tuesday that Kiko, a 2-year-old Masai giraffe, is heading north to join two female giraffes in hopes of breeding at the Toronto Zoo.
Animal-lovers were able to watch Kiko's birth live on the internet at the Greenville Zoo back in October of 2012. The Greenville Zoo is staging a goodbye for Kiko on Saturday.
A Species Survival Program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recommended the move to Canada. The program works to ensure the survival of species and to ensure genetic diversity.
