TalkBack for May 14: Council, snakes and nukes

On council

We need Gary Bunker back on the council.

Want versus need

City and County Council focus too much on the word "want" when they should be focused on the needs. It's their job to create projects not because people want something, but because the citizens need things.

High grass

When you go toward Georgia on I-20, the grass is so high. If your car breaks down, you could get bitten by a snake.

Nuke dump

I sympathize with the writer concerned about living 12 miles from a nuke dump. All I can say is get used to it; it's only going to get worse.

State tags

The person complaining about the out-of-state tags needs to realize there are people coming into Aiken every day and every month. They may stay a day, they may stay a year and they may stay a month. They are still residents of their state. If they are going to stay here, they need to get state tags.

Public hearing

Gem Lakes residents need to attend the public hearing for the office park on the Silver Bluff end of Town Creek Road. There is no problem with it being approved, but there needs to be a presence to complain about construction at the time the new traffic light is put in and the road is widened.

Taxes

To the person comparing New York City sales tax to Aiken sales tax, I think you forgot to consider what the property taxes are in NYC.

No license

No training or license needed to carry a gun? Next there will be no license needed to drive. These laws may be the results of "no ID" to vote. Imagine the kinds of tourists that would want to visit the gunslinger south. "Don't forget to pack your gun, honey. And take the old car; no insurance down there."

More funding

If SRS needs more funding, they should go to the Aiken City Council. I'm sure they would impose another tax to bring in more money.

Subwoofer season

Tis the season for 1,000-watt powered subwoofers cruising through our streets and neighborhoods or parked in front of the same rental homes. I'd still like to know why the city fines for this annoyance is only one tenth of the county fine for the same annoyance. Stop with the slap on the hand and give Public Safety some real bite to help rid the city of this blight.
