COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina House is debating a law prohibiting courts from enforcing foreign law in the state.

Rep. Chip Limehouse says his bill is needed to prevent something like Sharia Law from coming to the United States. The Republican from Charleston says preventing judges from using laws based in Islam can protect America.

But opponents of the bill like Republican Rep. Gary Clary say it solves a problem that doesn't exist. The retired judge from Central says he never dealt with the issue during his decade on the bench. Clary says the state and U.S. constitutions assure it can never come up. He says the debate was a waste of time better spent on more important things.

Opponents of the bill lost a number of procedural votes Tuesday.
