An Aiken man and Augusta woman were arrested on trafficking cocaine charges after a car search Wednesday.

Clyde Smith, 29, and Erica Smith, 31, were arrested when Aiken Department of Public Safety conducted a search of their vehicle at 11:34 p.m.

Deputies saw a Dodge Charger leave the Knights Inn parking lot on Richland Avenue. After running the plate, deputies found it had been suspended by the Georgia DMV. Officers stopped the vehicle on Hayne Avenue. While speaking with Clyde, the deputies reported smelling the odor of marijuana, according to reports.

Deputies searched the vehicle and found a green Crown Royal bag. Inside the bag, deputies found a plastic bag with "a quantity of white powder substance," police said.

Officers also found scales, a wallet with "a white-powdery substance" inside it and a Norinco SKS rifle with a bayonet attached in the trunk, according to reports.

The Smiths admitted the items belonged to them and were both placed into the Aiken County detention center, where they remained Thursday, police said.

Tests were run on the powder, which turned out to be cocaine, police said.
