Dozens of East Aiken School of the Art students marched through the cafeteria Friday joined by "Matilda."

They were participating in a book parade, with each group introducing one or more of their favorite books from their grade levels.

Roald Dahl's "Matilda" is about a small girl with exceptional powers and amazing capabilities of reading books that take her all over the world.

She isn't the only popular fictional character the East Aiken children brought along on posters for the parade.

For example, Junie B. Jones is a charming little girl who gets into lots of adventures with her friends, her parents and other adults. Winn-Dixie is a friendly dog who helps out a lonely little girl named Opal.

In 2009, East Aiken formally was named a school of the arts. Earlier this month, the school added a designation as an arts magnet school - now allowing any parents interested in arts integration to enroll their child.

The school will hold its spring concert at Cedar Creek Church at 7 p.m. Thursday.
