Though Lisa Tharp-Bernard has seen the "Les Misérables" role of Fantine play out several times onstage, she was "absolutely captivated" by Anne Hathaway's "haunting portrayal" in the 2012 film adaptation.
Tharp-Bernard is now taking on role of Fantine, which is best noted for singing "I Dreamed A Dream," in Aiken Community Playhouse's presentation of the musical.
"Les Misérables" will open at 8 p.m. Friday and will run at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 29 and 30 and June 5 and 6, as well as at 3 p.m. Sunday and May 31 at the URS Center for Performing Arts, 126 Newberry St. S.W. The show on May 29 will accommodate the hearing impaired.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for ages 60 and older, $15 for students and $10 for ages younger than 12.
"In 19th century France, Jean Valjean (Brad King) is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment," according to the play's description. "He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption."
Based on the Victor Hugo book of the same title, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the musical's book, and Schönberg wrote the show's music.
"I am honored that Marcia (Harris, director), Jim (Moore, assistant director) and Steven (McKinney, music director) have given me the chance to portray the role of Fantine," Tharp-Bernard said. "This cast, crew and production staff have been incredible to work with. 'Les Mis' is a very challenging show, musically and theatrically. I have to say that from day one, I have been blown away at the caliber of talent who make up the cast of Les Miserables. The CSRA is in for a real treat."
