Two Aiken residents were charged with unlawful conduct toward a child along with burglary charges that originally led to the search of their residence Wednesday morning.

Aiken Department of Public Safety officers responded to a home at 251 Laurens St. at 4 a.m.

Officers found "numerous stolen items and also observed illegal drug activity taking place while the juvenile victim was inside," police said.

The stolen items and a quantity of green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana were seized by detectives, according to reports.

While searching the apartment, officers smelled a foul odor, observed a large amount of trash in the pantry area, roaches crawling on the door to the pantries and the sink overflowing with dishes, according to reports.

Officers saw a juvenile crawling on the floor and chewing on various things, including Q-tips, coins and a hair weave, police said.

The suspects said they were "planning to clean the house before all of this happened," according to reports.

The suspects were placed into the Aiken County detention center, and the juvenile was released to family friends, police said.
