Simpsonville mayor found guilty on 2 of 3 charges
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) — The mayor of Simpsonville was has been found guilty on charges of misconduct and obstruction of justice and will face probation.
The Greenville News reports 80-year-old Perry Eichor was convicted Tuesday on one count of misconduct in office and obstruction of justice in connection with his discussion of a pending case with a municipal court judge. Eichor was found not guilty of intimidation of a court official.
Prosecutors say Eichor used his elected position to impede a pending case in March 2014, where a woman was charged with disorderly conduct after she placed a banner on a closed bridge. Assistant Solicitor Lisa Bentley says Eichor had a closed-door meeting with a municipal court judge and the charges were later dropped.
It is unclear how long Eichor's probation will be.
Clemson AD asks baseball fans to move forward after firing
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich says it's time for the school's supporters to move forward and bring optimism to the program as it searches for a replacement for baseball coach Jack Leggett.
Radakovich wrote on ClemsonTigers.com that he has gotten "tremendous" interest from coaches around the country and that this week he and the selection committee will meet with some potential candidates to fill Leggett's job.
While Radakovich did not name those coaches, he said that some may still be "participating in postseason play."
Radakovich would not give a timetable for hiring a new coach, only saying that he and the committee will take as long as it needs to find the best choice for Clemson.
Leggett was fired last week after Clemson finished the 2015 season at 32-29.
SC town attempting to set record for largest sweet tea
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Summerville is brewing tea for a big crowd.
On Wednesday, the town about 20 miles northwest of Charleston is attempting to set the record for the largest container of sweet tea.
Organizers say 198 pounds of tea from the nearby Charleston Tea Plantation is being brewed in a 10-foot-tall fiberglass container that contains 1,400 gallons. It is being sweetened with 2,100 pounds of sugar and cooled with 2,800 pounds of ice.
The brewing begins in the morning and the tea should be ready to taste by afternoon. A tea party is being held later in the day in front of town hall and an official of the Guinness Book of World Records will be on hand to verify the record.
