SLED checking report of missing money in Lexington County
LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) — State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating reports of missing money in the Lexington County clerk of court's office.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry confirmed the investigation to The State newspaper on Wednesday. Berry would not provide details on the investigation.
The office handles child support and alimony payments as well as other legal fees and fines.
Clerk of Court Beth Carrigg said she asked for the investigation after learning of a problem. Carrigg said the request for a SLED investigation comes after an independent audit of some financial transactions in the office.
She would not say which funds were affected but said it was not the child support account.
Carrigg also would not say whether any of her 40-member staff has been suspended or fired.
Company gives day care toys to replace stolen ones
LAKE WYLIE, S.C. (AP) — A Charlotte business has given toys to a Lake Wylie business to help replace stolen playground equipment.
The Rock Hill Herald reported Wednesday ten people from Giving Tree Realty filled three cars and SUVs with toys to deliver about 22 miles away at Giving Tree Child Development Center. In a press release, York County sheriff's offices say in mid-May, two men stole more than $5,000 in toys and playground equipment from the day care.
Giving Tree Realty broker-in-charge Bruce Bleiman says a broker mentioned it and the organization immediately reacted. Giving Tree Realty donates a portion of every real estate transaction to charity and encourages its 43 brokers to get involved in local charities.
Authorities say the theft case is still under investigation, but have developed several possible leads.
Escaped Pickens County inmate captured; 1 still at large
PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say one of two inmates who escaped from a minimum-security facility in Pickens County has been captured.
The Anderson Independent-Mail (http://bit.ly/1JLmpIx ) reports 28-year-old Dustin Ryan Floyd was taken back into custody Wednesday night. Officers say Floyd and 28-year-old Jeffrey Shane Mauldin escaped from the Pickens County Stockade Tuesday night.
Chief Deputy Creed Hashe says the two are believed to have opened up a section of the fence surrounding a yard at the stockade. A third inmate, 25-year-old Joshua Paul Jackson, has been charged with aiding the escape.
Hashe says Mauldin is not considered dangerous but should not be approached by anyone other than law enforcement. Mauldin was last seen wearing orange prison shorts and a white T-shirt.
