On Saturday, teammates of Toyian Williams will take to the Riverview Park Activities Center in North Augusta to honor their fallen teammate.
Last June, Williams lost his footing while fishing, slipped in the Savannah River and drowned.
The 33-year-old North Augusta resident was beloved by many in the community, especially those at the Gold's Gym on Edgewood Drive, according to the event's Facebook page.
The Toyian R. Williams Legacy Scholarship Fund has since been established; and beginning this month, annual scholarships will be awarded to high school senior student-athletes.
The 2015 Toyian R. Williams Legacy Basketball Game will see some of his former teammates from North Augusta High School take on his former teammates from Savannah State University.
There also will be halftime contests, including one for half-court shots.
The goal of the event is simple: To turn tragedy into triumph.
Doors will open for the game at 12:30 p.m., with tip-off being at 1 p.m. Admission is $5 and T-shirts also will be on sale for $10; additional donations toward the scholarships are also welcome.
