Deputies question details on missing Pendleton toddler

PENDLETON, S.C. (AP) — Anderson County sheriff's deputies are questioning some details they've been given about a 1-year-old girl who has been missing for nearly a week.

Sheriff's Lt. Sheila Cole told local media that at least two details they were given about Leaona Cheyanne Wright of Pendleton are probably wrong.

Cole says investigators do not think that a 3-year-old girl opened the door to allow Leona to crawl outside. Cole says investigators also think the girl was not there when her mother arrived at the home at 5:30 a.m. June 6.

Deputies have interviewed the mother, her boyfriend and their neighbors, friends and family members.

Crime Stoppers of Anderson has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

Cole says investigators are still hopeful of finding Leaona alive and well.

Charleston man gets 40 years for killing over a thrown beer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A 57-year-old North Charleston man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting a man after an argument over a thrown beer.

The Post and Courier reports Vaughn Hilliard was found guilty Wednesday in the death of 46-year-old Troy Cason in September 2013. Assistant solicitor Culver Kidd says Hilliard admitted to the shooting, but claimed self-defense.

In an incident report, Cason's girlfriend told police she and Cason were speaking to two other people on Sept. 7, 2013, when one of whom threw a beer on the ground. Hilliard came around the corner of a trailer and began arguing with Cason because he thought the victim threw beer. Cason pushed Hilliard to the ground. Hilliard went to get a rifle and shot him. Cason died two days later.
