COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A man has died while swimming in the Broad River in Columbia in an apparent drowning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says investigators were told that a group of swimmers were trying to cross a roughly 100 wide stretch of the river when one of them went under.

Watts said the victim is a man in his early 20s. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning. The victim's name has not been released.

Deputies charge 2 people, say they helped inmates escape

PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — Two people have been arrested after officials say they helped two inmates escape the Pickens County Stockade.

Multiple news outlets report 21-year-old Semeca Dannyelle Oglesby and 46-year-old William "Billy" David Burns were arrested Tuesday and charged with aiding escape from prison.

Authorities say Jeffrey Shane Mauldin and Dustin Ryan Floyd walked off the Stockade grounds June 9.

Deputies later found Oglesby had arranged for transportation and was present when both escapees were picked up by another vehicle near the Stockade. Authorities say Burns also helped Floyd and Mauldin with transportation.

Mauldin was found Friday morning and was arrested after a brief foot chase with deputies. Floyd was taken into custody Wednesday evening.

Both men are charged with escape. It is unclear if any of the four arrested have lawyers.
