A picture is worth a thousand words.
Patrick Nicholson and his son Joshua "Moose" Nicholson believe that with each picture they take.
The father-son duo teamed up two years ago to start P&M Foto, and Joshua even left his job as a bartender to pursue photography as a profession.
"Photography has been a passion since I was 13," said Patrick, adding he participated in school yearbook photography growing up, and it "just stuck" with him.
Joshua also grew up around photography. "(Joshua) was very artistic at a young age," Patrick said.
Joshua said he began taking pictures at Steeplechase, and then at college.
"He is way more gifted than I ever was," Patrick said of his son.
"I remember, one time, I asked my mom why dad took pictures so much," said Joshua. "She said 'I guess he sees the world differently than everyone else.'"
The two agree they are very "opportunistic" photographers.
"We don't really set up for a shot," said Joshua, adding most of the time it is all about keeping his eyes open and being ready.
"Weddings encompass everything," said Patrick. "But candid shots are our favorite at weddings."
Patrick also said children's portraits are fun because they "are the most honest with their emotions."
"Sometimes we will get the same picture just at different angles," said Joshua, adding how similar he and his father's artistic views are.
Patrick and Joshua agreed that running the business together has strengthened their bond as father and son. "It's not easy," said Patrick. "We co-exist much better now."
"We don't try to kill each other," added Joshua, laughing. "It certainly has brought us closer together."
"I feel fortunate to have a father who pursued to keep his children fed and clothed instead of pursuing what he loved," said Joshua. "At that point, photography becomes more than just a passion, it becomes important."
