More dangerous heat along South Carolina coast

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The heat goes on in South Carolina.

The National Weather Service has again issued a heat advisory in 16 counties along the coast and in the Pee Dee.

The advisory is in effect Tuesday from midday until early evening.

Forecasters say heat index readings could reach up to 113 along the south coast.

Cities included in the heat advisory area include Charleston, Florence, Hilton Head Island, Mount Pleasant, Myrtle Beach, North Charleston and Summerville,

YMCA counselor drowns in SC lake after jumping from bridge

CLOVER, S.C. (AP) — A 19-year-old South Carolina man is dead after he and a fellow YMCA camp counselor went for an early-morning dip in Lake Wylie.

The York County Coroner's Office says 19-year-old Jeremiah Tate of Columbia was found by rescue divers close to the Buster Boyd Bridge before dawn on Monday. He was a camp counselor at Camp Thunderbird and jumped from the bridge around 2 a.m. with fellow Camp Thunderbird counselor Samuel Williams of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Williams told sheriff's deputies Tate had trouble swimming and kept sinking when he tried to help him.

Tate was a sophomore at Wofford College, where he played on the men's basketball team. He played in 13 games over two years.

42 new troopers graduate from SC Highway Patrol

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Highway Patrol graduated 42 troopers from its Basic Class 96.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports Basic 96's graduation Thursday brings the total number of troopers in the state to 768.

The troopers, who began training in January, graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy on May 8 and continued on for specialized training from the Patrol in all areas of law enforcement, including DUI detection, traffic laws, collision investigation and the use of firearms.

The graduates will complete another 400 hours of field training upon graduation.

The Highway Patrol received 1,777 applications and 910 applicants were referred for processing for Basic 96.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith says the troopers from the class will head to communities all over the state.
