The Hopelands Summer Concert Series continues today with a performance from the Aiken Big Band. at the Roland H. Windham Performing Arts Stage at Hopelands Gardens and begin at 7 p.m., the concert will last approximately an hour. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center on Whiskey Road.

In 2009, the Aiken Big Band was created to perform as one of the closing performances for the Hopelands Gardens Summer Concert Series. It was formed by several members of the Southern Nights dance band and augmented with other local musicians to form a 17-piece studio band. Vocal soloists were added to enhance the bands ability to cover more of the music performed during the Big Band Era. After the band's first performance at Hopelands, members decided to continue with the rehearsals and performances. Most of the musical selections are drawn from the Big Band Era, and, in many cases, from compositions and original arrangements of that time period. The band leader is Col. Bill Clark, and Bill Foss has provided nearly all of the band's arrangements. Catherine Stapleton Nance and Lisa Tharp Bernard are the featured vocal soloists. "Bandstand Boogie," "Summertime," "Pennsylvania Polka" and "Mombo Italiano" are some of the musical selections on today's program. During the coming season, the Aiken Concert Band will be sponsoring the Aiken Big Band in some dances to assist in raising funds for the concert band's music and instrumental needs.

The Hopelands Summer Concert Series will continue throughout the summer each Monday night until the end of August. All concerts will begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. The concert series is intended to bring the performing arts to Aiken and the surrounding area for fans of all ages. Admission to the series is free. Hopelands Gardens is located just off Whiskey Road.

Handicap, performers, and staff parking will be located at the Rye Patch. There is no parking on Berrie Road or Dupree Place. Public parking is available at the Green Boundary Club on Whiskey Road across from Hopelands Gardens.
