Downtown nature and garden shop Birds & Butterflies is looking for a different kind of wildlife - the Aiken amateur shutterbug.
For the third year running, Birds & Butterflies owners Ron and Dori Brenneman are hosting the shop's amateur photography contest. Entries will be accepted from Aug. 10 through 15; voting for the People's Choice Award will be open from Aug. 16 -18; and winners will be announced at a reception on Aug. 20 at the shop. The entries will remain on display until Aug. 25, according to Mr. Brenneman.
"The interest in this contest has increased over the past two years, and the quality of the photographs we've received has been spectacular," Brenneman said. "I think since people have gone over to digital, they're looking for new ways to use their photographs, and this is a chance to print them out and share them."
Photographs will be accepted in the categories Critters, Scenery, and Youth. Entrants are limited to two photo submissions, and there is a $5 per photo entry fee for all except Youth entries. Photographs must have been taken in South Carolina, and may not be digitally enhanced. Prints should be 8-inches-by-10-inches and matted to 11 1/2-inches-by-14-inches. The back of each entry should include the name, address, phone number, photo title, photo location and other details on the subject.
Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place choices in each category. A three-person panel of judges to be named later will decide on the winners of ribbons and Birds & Butterflies gift certificates.
The Brennemans also plan to use the photo contest entries in a 2013 nature calendar again this year. They will choose 12 to 15 images, not necessarily contest winners, to illustrate the wall calendar. A portion of the proceeds from the calendar sales will go to support Silver Bluff Audubon Center & Sanctuary, according to Mr. Brenneman.
"We're extremely pleased by the response this contest has gotten, the number of entries received, and by the quality of the photographs we've gotten in both the adult and the youth categories," he said.
For more information about the contest, visit Birds & Butterflies at 117 Laurens St. N.W., call the shop at 649-7999, or e-mail birdbflies@aol.com.
