With just over a month to go before the United Way of Aiken County begins its fall fundraising campaign, Savannah River Remediation has given the agency a boost with a $25,000 donation.

"What a nice way to start off the campaign," said United Way president Sharon Rodgers. "SRR has already kicked off their campaign and started a bowling tournament Monday. The five of us (on staff) are on a team, but don't expect any major bowling from us. We're there for moral support."

The United Way supports more than 30 partner agencies that provide social services throughout the county. The formal kickoff luncheon will be held at Newberry Hall Friday, Aug. 31 at noon. The campaign will have a Willy Wonka theme this year, and "Willy" himself will attend the luncheon.

United Way staffers and volunteers will announce the 2012 goal. A year ago, Aiken County residents donated more than $2.7 million - substantially beating the 2011 goal.

"The economy is still struggling, but this community is so generous," Rodgers said. "We're always optimistic that people will continue to support our partner agencies and help us provide the resources to run their critical needs programs."

Three companies thus far will provide "loaned professionals" to work with the campaign full-time for about 10 weeks. They are Teressa Butler, Department of Energy; David Tripp, WSI-SRS; and Kelly Silvers, Security Federal Bank. Butler is serving as a loaned professional for the second straight year. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will name a staffer soon.

Several companies have started their campaigns and others will join them soon, Rodgers said. Parsons has already completed its fundraising drive, while SCE&G has begun as well. UPS Custom Brokerage has participated in tours of United Way partners in advance of its campaign, while SRNS plans to get its campaign under way Aug. 17.

Dave Olson, the SRR president and project manger, said the company's recent donation is intended give the campaign an early boost and set the tone for future donors.

"Everyone knows how important the United Way work is to this area, and what a tremendous job they do each year in helping those in need," Olson said in a press release. "I am proud Savannah River Remediation can be a part of something that does so much for so many."

United Way also hosted "School Tools" this summer, with residents donating basic school supplies. Staffers and volunteers will sort the supplies at Aiken Electric Cooperative Aug. 14, and representatives from every public school will pick up supplies the next day to distribute to children in need of pencils, pens, notebooks and more.
