The next Aiken Republican Club meeting will host two area talents that many may have heard on the local radio.
WGAC Augusta’s Morning News hosts Harley Drew and News Director Mary Liz Nolan will be the speakers at the club’s monthly luncheon.
Club President Tony Coffaro said they asked Drew and Nolan to speak at the meeting because of their notoriety in the area by being part of one of the largest talk show programs in the CSRA.
“Harley is a legend and Mary Liz is very talented,” Coffaro said. “I’m excited about them coming.”
Harley Drew is a 53-year veteran of broadcast news and has been with the Beasley Broadcast Group of Augusta for the past 18 years. Not only is he a host of the morning news show but also the program director.
Drew was elected to the Georgia Hall of Fame in 2011, Coffaro said.
“Harley is a gentleman and real good guy,” Coffaro said. “What you hear on the radio is what you see in person.”
Nolan has been involved in radio for 30 years starting her career in Columbus, Ind., as a disc jockey. She later moved up into an assistant news director position and relocated to Augusta in 1990. She has worked with Drew on the Augusta Morning News program for the past 16 years.
Coffaro said that she has accomplished much in her career, receiving recognition from Georgia Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press as well as winning seven Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Newscast in the southeastern region. She’s also a very family-oriented individual, he added.
The meeting will be held Tuesday at Newberry Hall located at 117 Newberry St.
Members pay $15, and it’s $20 for non-members to attend – the fee covers lunch. Registration and social time will begin at 11 a.m., and lunch will served at noon.
